By Karen Skelton, VaHomeschoolers Government Affairs Director
VaHomeschoolers is aware that a federal bill, H.R.610 has been introduced in Congress that seeks “to distribute federal funds for elementary and secondary education in the form of vouchers.” While we focus our legislative efforts primarily on state level issues, we do attend to national level matters when called for. The nature of H.R. 610 is one of those times. We are carefully reviewing the details of the bill and all its implications.
Our legislative positions are guided by our annual member survey, which consistently show a wide range of views on issues of tax credits and voucher programs. This means we have traditionally held a neutral position on these matters. Now, H.R. 610 introduces a new issue: that of defining, at a national level, what it means to be homeschooling.
VaHomeschoolers has always maintained a position that the federal government should not be involved in homeschooling legislation or policy, and we’d like to keep it that way.
We are preparing an information sheet about H.R.610 and how it may affect homeschooling. We have been promoting and protecting the interests of Virginia homeschoolers since 1993, and will continue to serve and support you.
