Government Affairs Team

The Organization of Virginia Homeschoolers (VaHomeschoolers) has lobbied on behalf of Virginia’s diverse homeschooling community for over two decades. In the past, our experienced lobbyists represented homeschooling interests in the Virginia General Assembly in Richmond and in school divisions across the state. On occasion, we also lobbied on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.

Our Government Affairs team consists of homeschooling parents from around the state who serve as volunteer legislative monitors during the legislative season.

Government Affairs monitors legislation and policy initiatives across the state for possible impact on Virginia’s homeschoolers. Of special concern are the home instruction and compulsory attendance statutes, the tutor and religious exemption provisions, driver education, truancy, curfews, tax credits, and access to public school services and programs. We avoid issues of a religious or partisan political nature.

VaHomeschoolers is committed to advocating for high-quality, effective homeschooling laws and policies across Virginia. We have written and helped to craft and implement numerous laws, bills, and policies at the state and local level.

We are happy to share our extensive experience with parents, lawmakers, policymakers, and educators who are interested in improving Virginia’s homeschooling laws and policies, or in resolving conflicts or misunderstandings involving homeschooling. We ensure that all viewpoints are heard, and work towards mutually acceptable solutions for all parties involved.

The Government Affairs team takes its direction from the membership of The Organization of Virginia Homeschoolers, through our annual membership survey and direct communication with our members. We invite you to contact us at any time with your questions, suggestions, and concerns.

Our Other Activities

  • Dialoguing with various homeschooling groups and organizations, the Virginia Department of Education, local school divisions, and other state and local agencies and organizations regarding homeschooling legal and policy matters.
  • Helping parents and school divisions resolve misunderstandings involving homeschooling.
  • Educating parents and the community on homeschooling related legal and political matters through personal contacts, workshops and seminars, and the VaHomeschoolers website.
