ISO Notice of Intent Examples

With the August 15th deadline for submitting a Notice of Intent (NOI) to homeschool having just passed, a new academic year is beginning for homeschoolers in Virginia.  Through our website and our helpline, The Organization of Virginia Homeschoolers has assisted a number of homeschoolers, both new and veteran, in understanding what information Virginia law requires that they include in their NOI and curriculum description.

We’d like to update the sample NOIs and curriculum descriptions on our website with examples from 2007 and later which have been successfully accepted by school divisions. We are looking for examples for all options, but are especially in need of current option iii and option iv examples.

If you are willing to share your NOI wording with other homeschoolers who may be wondering how to get started, please submit them to webadmin@vahomeschoolers.org.  All examples will be shared anonymously, with personally identifying information removed.

Have Questions About Your NOI?

Even veteran homeschoolers might like to check out VaHomeschoolers’ webpages on NOIs and curriculum descriptions, which address these and other questions:

  • What sort of information should I include in my annual “description of curriculum” to my school division?
  • How long or short should a curriculum description be?
  • Does the school division ever have the right to ask for more information about my curriculum?
  • How have other families written their curriculum descriptions?

What happens if you decide to homeschool after the August 15 deadline? Can you still file or do you have to wait until the following year?
