Amy Wilson will speak about bringing children to nature at the Friends August meeting. Amy is a homeschooling mom to two kids, ages 10 and 12. She and her family live in Prince William County where Amy has been a volunteer Master Naturalist for three years. Amy has loved nature since she was a child, and was more likely to turn over rocks to look for salamanders than to play with Barbie dolls. Today, she combines her amateur naturalist tendencies with homeschooling by leading a nature club in her local homeschooling community. She also writes a regular column, “The Naturalist’s Corner,” for The Organization of Virginia Homeschoolers’ bimonthly magazine, Voice. Amy is a member of the Board of Directors of VaHomeschoolers, and chairs that statewide homeschool advocacy organization’s Government Affairs Committee. The Friends meeting is at the Park visitor’s center at 7pm on Tuesday, August 2nd. The Park is 8 miles south of Front Royal on Rt. 340.
Our Junior Ranger Day Camp is open to children 7-12 years old. The five day program will be held July 25 to 29, 2011 and repeats August 1 to 5, 2011. Sessions run from 10:00 am to 12 noon each day. Activities will include an introduction to the Park and the job of Park Ranger, and hikes, nature study, and crafts all designed to enhance the child’s awareness of, and appreciation for, the natural environment. There is a $10 per child registration fee for this program. Additional information may be found in the attached registration form.
