The Organization of Virginia Homeschoolers would like to notify our members and the homeschooling community in general of a subcommittee hearing of the Virginia House Education Committee on September 6, 2011 at 10 am in Richmond, in the General Assembly Building, House Room D.
The topic of the meeting is House Bill 2395, the Homeschool Sports Access Bill, sponsored by Del. Rob Bell (R-Charlottesville). The bill was assigned to this special subcommittee at the end of the 2011 legislative session so that legislative staff could review the ways in which other states have dealt with this issue. At the upcoming hearing, the staff will make its report. Del. Bell will speak in support of the bill, and then we anticipate that there will be an opportunity for public comment.
If you are interested in this topic, VaHomeschoolers recommends that you read the complete bill text, which is located here.
In addition, we have some background information on homeschool sports access and answers to frequently-asked questions available on our website. Please see:
Homeschool Sports Access FAQs
VaHomeschoolers lobbyist Scott Price will be present at the hearing, as will Board members Parrish Mort, Jeanne Faulconer and Leslie Nathaniel.
We would like to invite homeschooling families who are interested in supporting this bill to attend the meeting. There may be an opportunity to make a public comment, or simply to stand and be recognized as a supporter of the bill when indicated by Del. Bell. Well-behaved students would be welcome to attend as well.
To help organize supporters and provide tips on making effective comments, Del. Bell has graciously offered to host a breakfast session, with coffee, juice and bagels, for supporters of his bill in House Room 5 West from 9 to 10 a.m. on September 6, immediately prior to the meeting. After the meeting’s conclusion, homeschooling families can take advantage of an opportunity to tour the capitol. This is a great way to introduce students to civics in action.
If your family is interested in attending, please email GovtAffairs@VaHomeschoolers.org and let us know. This will allow us to inform Del. Bell of the number of people to expect for the hearing and for breakfast. He has made such a nice offer, and we want to be considerate in helping him to plan for us.
