Learning in the 17th Century (September 20)
Experience a home school education program designed to help meet curriculum goals in a fun, interactive environment at a living history museum. Students will work with our re-created Colonial Citie and the Powhatan Indian site to see what kind of education children received to help them live in the world 400 years ago. Students will be divided by age level to work on age-appropriate activities and curriculum.
Cost: $18 per student; $13 per accompanying adult / Henricus Patrons $13 per student; accompanying adults free. Pre-registration is required by September 17; please call (804) 318-8797.
We host a Homeschool Day twice a year, providing families with the school admission rate, along with special activities and live animal programs throughout the Aquarium. Our next event is Friday, September 21, 2018. View the detailed flyer of all activities.
Home Educators’ Day is an annual event that welcomes the homeschool community and offers special tours and activities throughout Monticello’s Visitor Center and historic grounds.
Students can explore a variety of Jeffersonian topics at indoor and outdoor hands-on activity stations, take a special guided tour of Monticello (*Last house tour of the day begins at 3:10pm), roll hoops and play games on the West Lawn, hike our trails, and more.
As You Like It
Two times each year, we offer specially priced student matinee performance dates exclusively available to homeschool families and co-ops. This full-day experience at the Blackfriars Playhouse includes a performance and actor talkback, lunch at the Stonewall Jackson, and a suite of workshops with our award-winning education team.
The museum is dedicating an autumn day to homeschool families. Educational activities, demonstrations, and special guests will be available for multiple ages throughout the event. Adults (18 & up):$11.00; Ages 2-17:$10; Military and Seniors:$10; Children under two: free; Members: free.
The Virginia Living Museum offers homeschool students grades K through 12 a day of fun and engaging programs that highlight important natural and space science concepts. Programs are available for grades K-4. A lab about pond life is available for grades 5-12. All programs are curriculum and grade-level targeted and taught by the museum’s professional educators. All programs include a self-guided visit of museum exhibits and are offered at a discount to homeschool families. Admission is $14 for adults accompanying homeschool students on the visit. For homeschool students taking the self-guided visit with no programs, admission is $9 (ages 3-18).
Join us on Monday, October 1st to meet and mingle with other homeschoolers from across Virginia! Participate in activities for all ages, including guided workshops and gallery walks, as well as self-guided crafts, games, and scavenger hunts. Participation is free for homeschoolers and chaperones, but registration is required. Please contact Maggie Creech, the Group Tour Coordinator, to register.

Join us for our Annual Days of Living History for homeschooled students. The program is geared for children ages 8 to 10 years old, although children younger and older benefit from the hands-on experience of 18th century life. Programs rotate among spinning and weaving, blacksmithing, pottery, Colonial medicine, basket making, tin punching, and rope making. Groups may register by providing the number and ages of children, as well as the number of adults in attendance.
Home Educator groups are welcome, but please have one person responsible for registering the group!
